Muslim Federal Conservatives Need a Wake-up Call

Having recently spoken to some Muslims regarding Canadian politics, an interesting trend seems to be emerging. It seems upper and middle class Muslims are falling prey to the “favourable” fiscal policy of the federal conservative party that aims to reduce taxes for the upper classes at the expense of the poor. Other Muslims just want to be associated with those in power such as former Liberal MP Wajid Khan, a business owner and a politician with no opinion of his own.

Still, others have the gall to claim that the Harper’s conservatives have a lot in common with Islam. Last time I checked, Harper supports the Canadian occupation of Afghanistan, the endless quagmire that is the war in Iraq, was vocal in his support for Israel during its invasion of Lebanon, and continues to unconditionally support American initiatives which are hardly Islamic.

Similarly, corporate tax breaks, cutting social programs, and ignoring the threat of global warming do not equate to Islamic practices either. Some uninformed Muslims have fallen into their trap, but if the conservatives believe that they can bribe all Muslims with money while they go on slaving to US foreign policy, they are really just fooling themselves.
